14 Ways to Make Money at Uni

Being a student is the poorest you will ever be in your life. You’re not just spending other people’s money, most of us are in debt from student loans even before we finish our studies. Some of us are lucky enough to have wealthy parents so that we won’t have to worry about a single thing throughout our studies. But the other unlucky ones of us, unfortunately, have to struggle to make it through on our own. Its not even just the hefty school fees and accommodation costs, what about other leisure activities or just having a pint or two down at the pub with friends? If you were a university student yourself, then you will indeed understand all these struggles. Fortunately, nowadays there are many ways for you to make extra money while at university. All you have to do is get off your bum and get out there! Today, we will explore ways to make money while at universities.

1. Get a Job

This is it, the end of the article. Just kidding. Getting a part-time job at a bar or restaurant is the most popular way to make money at university. Although this is backbreaking and will leave you tired and burnt out at the end of the week, you might want to consider this option if you are desperate. However, you should find something that you can handle, or even like doing at least. For example, you can find jobs to work at roadshows or promoter jobs that always pay by the hour. You can also find other part-time retail jobs to work at your favorite retailer and get discounts on top of your hourly pay. Although it’s not the most glamorous of employment, it works. If you’re a handyman, you can start by going around your neighborhood and offering a hand to fix anything for your neighbors. Chances are, they would be more willing to pay a familiar face than have some stranger in their house. But of course, you would have to ensure that you know what you’re doing and don’t cause more damage.

2. Survey websites

Survey websites are a great way to make a buck or two. All you have to do is look for survey websites such as MOBROG, sign up, fill in your demographics, and start answering some surveys! This is a great way to make money at university as it doesn’t require any specific skill set. It also doesn’t require any upfront costs. Although you won’t get much money off doing random surveys, if you do at least one a day for a whole month, you might be able to scrape around $30. Which is good enough for a couple of beers at least. Sites such as GoldOpinions pays around $5 to %10 per survey, so if you do around ten a month, you can earn up to $50 to $100 a month. Other sites that you can try are Cash Surveys Only or Paid Surveys at Home. Some sites offer vouchers instead of cash for surveys. It works by you accumulate points for each survey that you complete. You can then exchange the points for coupons which you can then use to buy other things.

If you’ve nagged your parents for being hoarders at your family home, then chances are you will find something somewhere that could make you some money. Why not visit your grandparents and ask if you can have a rummage through their storerooms? Although, its best to get their permission before you start selling all their precious items. I’m sure you can find some furniture or old things that they won’t want anymore. You could even just look inside your closet. It’s probably time to toss out clothing that you swear you will wear once you’ve lost that extra weight. Shoes or handbags are always exceptional items to sell, as there is always someone online looking for them. Selling your things is also a great way to make up some space in your house, so it feels less cluttered. You can also just keep an eye out for vintage sales where you can buy second-hand items for cheap and resell them on eBay or Amazon. If you have a knack for old items, this could be your type of job. Some people flip things on eBay. But you might need to have some woodworking skills. It’s great, though, as you get to pick up a new skill along the way.

If you’re interested, have a look at The Amazing Seller to learn about more things on reselling.

AmzScout is excellent if you’re selling items on Amazon. Profit Bandit and TeraPeak are other apps you could use.

3. Start a blog

If you’re passionate about something, you should start a blog. There are blogs about everything nowadays, from fashion to gaming, even bee farming, etc. Starting a blog is pretty simple as you can create them on free web hosting sites or website builders. They’re also straightforward to use as most of them have a drag and drop function. They’re also completely free. What’s great about starting a blog is that it gives you a platform to create content and share what you’re passionate about and share it with the world. If your content is good enough, slowly but surely, you will start to gain a following and gain traffic to your site. You don’t have to focus on getting traffic when you first get started, just focus on producing great content for your readers, and the traffic will eventually come. Blogging is simple, and you can get a lot of help and tips online.

4. Making Money with a Blog

If your blog gets a large amount of traffic, you can monetize it to get extra income. Blogs make income via several strategies:

  • You can make affiliates using the Amazon Affiliates Service if you’re reviewing other people’s products on your blog and get an affiliate commission.
  • Some bloggers get paid by brands to post content. For example, if you have a beauty blog, beauty brands might send you products for you to do a review on their page. They will also pay for your posts.
  • Get paid for people to run ads on your blogs! You can advertise on Google Adsense or Fiverr for gigs.

5. Test new products

Some companies pay people to test out new products that are yet to be launched in the market. You simply just sign up and fill in your details, and you will go through a screening to see if the product is suitable for you to test it. If it is, the company will send you the product for free, and you will just have to fill out a survey form on the product. This is valuable to companies so that they will know how a product will do once it’s on the market. And they can also tweak certain things to make the product better, based on your feedback. If the products you test doesn’t have a Non-Disclosure Agreement, you can even include them on your blog. You will usually get to keep the product you are testing, and some, but not all companies might also compensate you for your time. This is a slow and steady method to get paid, and you might not see high incomes, but its good enough if you just want to earn a few bucks on the side.

Here are some websites that you could use:

  • UserTesting pays you $10 to test out websites and apps if you fit the criteria.
  • AppCoiner also pays users to give honest reviews of online applications.
  • Gaming Jobs Online is for gamers to provide frank opinions about gaming niches.

6. Become a Lab Rat

Big pharmaceutical companies will pay a lot of money to conduct drug trials for new medications. If you do not have a background in any medical illnesses, this is an excellent way for you to make some income at university. If you’re at university, chances are you have a fit bill of health! You should take this opportunity to make some money. Drug trials usually pay quite a lot, depending on the duration and risk of the study. If it’s a long, high-risk study, you can make up to a few thousand for each trial! However, you should keep in mind that some of these studies might cause harm to your health or give you long term side effects, so you should always be aware of what you’re signing up! These trials usually come with a contract, and you should ever read through the contract or let someone more reliable to read it for you. This is so that you are aware of all the fine print in case anything wrong happens during the trial.

7. Selling your skills

If you have unutilized expertise, then you’re at a loss! If you look onto websites like Fiverr or Craigslist, you might find someone who requires a skill that you might have. Some of this is as simple as just being a friend or a companion! Yes, this is what the world is coming into, offering friendship services to people who are too busy to make friends! This is actually a thing, although you should be careful when meeting up with people over the internet. You can also find gigs for other random things, such as dog walking. Or if you know how to speak a second language? There are many translation jobs that you can find on Fiverr. If you’re a graphic designer, you can also help people design items via freelance pages online. A lot of people are looking for websites or logo designers on freelance websites. What’s excellent about freelance sites such as Fiverr is that you get to set your price for your service. Although it can be quite tricky to identify the real clients as there are many scammers out there that might use your service and disappear without paying you.

8. Sign up for Pick My Postcode (Free Postcode Lottery)

Having a go at the lottery isn’t going to do much, as a lot of it requires luck. You never know! It’s also free, so why not try your luck? The site generates a number at random and picks out winning numbers at the end of the day. The website makes a profit by advertising, so you should expect annoying pop-ups while you’re on it. I’d also recommend that you use an email address that is not your main one. This is because you will get a lot of spam from advertisements. Unfortunately, this site is only available in the UK. If you’re from here, I suggest you give it a go! They give out prizes of 400 to 1200 pounds a day. This method requires the least work, but it doesn’t guarantee a steady stream of income.

9. Tutoring or Teaching a Language

If you’re good at a particular subject or if you speak a different language, don’t let your skill go to waste! You can tutor anyone to do anything these days. If you’re a master at making websites, many people want to learn this. There are also a bunch of sites where you can teach English to non-English speaking countries! There are many language tutor sites that are all online, so you won’t even have to travel to your students. You can find teaching gigs either online or by word of mouth. Ask around your neighborhood if anyone requires tutoring. Once I tutored math to a ten-year-old kid in my neighborhood, and soon his mum also wanted me to tutor his sister. I got paid for both of them, which was pretty sweet! You can even check with your university if they offer any language classes if you speak a different language and begin teaching. The best thing is that you won’t also have to travel far! You might even get a new friend out of this!

10. Start an eCom dropshipping business

Starting an eCommerce drop shipping business is a viable way to make money in university. However, you should know that this money-making method requires a lot more hard work and dedication than the rest of these methods. It also requires you to have a healthy mindset before embarking on the dropshipping journey. Dropshipping business is like setting up a store without the inventory and unnecessary overhead costs. You’re primarily marketing and selling other people’s products. It’s a viable business model, but there are certain elements that you need to nail in order to survive in the business. Shopify or Aliexpress are both great platforms where you can start your drop shipping business. There is also a lot of information that you can find online on how to start a drop shipping business from scratch. You can find a lot of YouTube tutorials, too, if you don’t like reading. There are also many online entrepreneurs that you can learn from, they even conduct classes or give out programs, but some of them might be costly.

11. Cashback sites

Cashback sites won’t make you too much money, but it’s more like something you nurture, and at the end of the year, you will see your result. It works much like affiliate sites work where they refer you to a website, and they get a percentage of your checkout price, and you get some of this back. For example, you buy something via a Cashback site, and they will you 10% back on your purchase. Sites like Quidco or TopCashBack can help you start earning little by little if you start now.

12. Watch out for tax

Always ensure that you’re using the right tax code when you’ve just started working. Student workers are usually given an emergency tax code where they end up paying more tax than they should. Check with your employer if you’re given the right tax code. You can also do this via the HRMC website and have them reassess your situation. If they’ve assessed you and found that you’ve been paying more tax than you should, you can expect a hefty amount of cash at the end of the year, and its yours to keep!

13. Become an Online Marketer

You’ve probably already come across this way of money making if you’ve been searching online. How does it work? An Online marketer or affiliate marketer gives honest reviews about products and share them with other people. If someone buys the product you have reviewed, you will get a percentage commission out of this sale. It’s really simple, and all you need is a platform where you can gain traffic.

14. Become a Herbalife or ItWorks Facebook rep

You probably won’t resort to this method unless you’re really, really desperate. This is a sure way to not only make you some extra money, but also get rid of your friends in the meantime! Although some people have seen success doing this, not all have the aggressiveness and tenacity to see it through. Becoming a Herbalife rep is annoying and will turn your friends and family against you.

Verdict – Is it Possible to Make Money at University?

As you can see, there are a lot of ways that you can make money while you’re at university. All it takes is a little sacrifice, hard work, and dedication. You should take a step back and evaluate all these possibilities and evaluate your skill set. Does any of these jobs suit your skill set? You won’t make money unless you put yourself out there and start doing something. However, you should be careful if you’re making any deals online. There might be some scammers out there who are just looking to use your services and disappear without paying. I have personally experienced these situations and they can be very demotivating especially if you’ve poured your heart and soul into the work and just get neglected. It’s important that you dust yourself off and get back up again! Its also important that you learn from your lessons so it won’t happen to you again in the future. It might not be easy at the start, but it will be worth it in the end.
