How to Rank YouTube Videos

Search Engine Optimization is crucial if you want to build an online presence. No matter if you are a YouTuber, blogger, eCommerce store owner, affiliate marketer, Search Engine Optimization is your best friend. Search Engine Optimization allows you to build visibility online by targeting and ranking keywords that customers search online for your particular niche.

You can use it to drive traffic to any online site you have. For example, if you have an eCommerce store, you can use both YouTube and Google Search Engine Optimization strategies to boost your site’s visibility online. Search Engine Optimization can help you gain some traction if your online site is struggling to get traffic. More traffic translates to more conversions, sales, or commissions, so you do not want to miss out on this strategy for your business.

What to expect in this article

This article aims to provide you with a step by step blueprint on Search Engine Optimization so that you can master the art of ranking on YouTube to drive traffic to any of your online sites. It is not just YouTube. We will be discussing here, and as a bonus, we will also explore the art of ranking on Google.

What you can expect are real methods and tips that are tried and tested by myself as an experienced online entrepreneur, and other experts in the field. But before we get down to business, let us address some critical Frequently Asked Questions that will put some of your worries to rest.

Is YouTube an excellent strategy to get traffic?

Everyone knows that Google is the largest search engine, which is why most online entrepreneurs turn to Google ranking for their primary traffic strategy. However, did you know that YouTube comes next after Google? There are currently billions of users on YouTube. By ranking on YouTube, you are exploring a whole world of traffic possibilities. It also helps that most people prefer watching videos and spend a long time watching videos than other content.

Because of this, videos have a higher chance of converting traffic as prospective customers who spend at least a few minutes or so on your channel, will most likely buy something from your store or affiliate products. So if you think about it, YouTube is a great place to drive traffic to your other online sites as you get high-quality conversions.

Personal experience with YouTube Search Engine Optimization

My personal experience with YouTube SEO is excellent, as it shows that my efforts do increase views every month. Even if my channel only has less than 20 videos, the number of viewers is steadily climbing without much effort (besides initial optimizations, of course). Also, I would like to point out that these videos aren’t extraordinary, as they are just a bunch of slideshows that we will also learn to do in this article.

YouTube SEO – Ranking YouTube Videos For Higher Traffic And Conversions

To ensure your YouTube videos appear on page one of your customer’s search engines, several factors require optimization.

What is YouTube Keyword Research?

Before we embark on learning new traffic methods, let us first understand what YouTube Keyword Research means. Some of you might already know this, but I have included this small subsection for beginners or newbies into the field. Keyword research is a method to identify what customers are searching for in your niche. For example, if you have a cooking channel, what are the common keywords that people type into their search engines to find the top pages?

All the possibilities for keywords can range from ‘easy one-pot recipes’ or ‘how to poach an egg,’ for example. Doing this is similar to conducting market research to learn more about your customer habits, including their demographics for better targeting. With this information, you can reach greater lengths on your sites. If you do not have at least basic market research, then all your marketing efforts, costs will be for nothing.

Your guide to mastering YouTube Keyword Research

Now that we have addressed some frequently asked questions, we are ready to dive right into your step by step guide to use YouTube keyword research correctly and efficiently.

1. Generating your list of keywords

You should have gathered a list of keywords, phrases, or terms that audiences in your niche are searching for from your market research activities. You can do this by researching what your competitors are targeting and assess the keyword ranking to decide if you want to begin focusing on it. Then, type in these keywords or phrases into the YouTube search bar, and you can see which videos or channels come up.

For example, your market research has revealed that the skincare niche is currently doing well, from searching for things like ‘removing acne’ or ‘removing blackheads.’ Now that you have some ideas for keywords, you can enter them into the YouTube search bar to see the top suggestions.

2. Searching for your possible target keywords

Now that you know exactly what your potential audience is searching for remember to jot down other suggestions that your searches have come up with so you can try them out later. With the results of your market research, log in to YouTube and enter them one after another into the search bar. While you are typing, a list of suggestions will show up, and these are the other keywords your audiences are typing into their search engine to find something in your niche. Doing this is the best for targeting because these keywords aren’t just predictions but actually what your audience is searching for. For example, when you type ‘removing blackheads’ into the YouTube search bar, suggestions that might come out are ‘removing blackheads with nose strips’ or ‘removing blackheads fast.’ Go ahead and add these keywords into your growing list and congratulations because now you can accurately target your audience with a keyword tool for optimum results.

3. How to use the Google Keyword Planner

Next, we will start the whole process all over again (well sort of) but with the Google Keyword Planner tool. The Keyword Planner is useful because it will show you the number of searches that appear on Google for a rough estimation of competition for your potential keyword. On top of this, you will also get another list of related keywords to add to your list. The only thing is to use the keyword planner tool, and you need a Gmail account. You can sign up for free quickly in no time and proceed with your keyword research. So, for your first time using the tool, you will need to ‘create a campaign.’ We’re not doing this for now; instead, you should head straight to the keyword tool itself. When you are ready to buy Pay Per Click (PPC) traffic using Adwords.

Using the Google Keyword Planner

But today, head straight to the keyword tool to find ‘Find New Keywords’ and start inputting keywords from your list into the search bat. You might look at your long list and wonder how long you will take if you were to do it one by one. But thankfully, you can input up to 10 keywords at a time! After this, you will get your list of results where you can filter either ‘closely related ideas’ or ‘exclude adult ideas.’ Whichever filter that suits your business is what you want to go for. Then, sort the ‘average monthly searches’ column from highest to lowest, which will reveal your list of keywords that receive over 100 searches each month. Sometimes, you will get some keywords with less than 100 searches, which are ‘buy now keywords.’ These are unique keywords that do better commercially than other keywords, which makes them unique.

Now that you have your results note down the ones that have higher competition as it usually means that those keywords will help you rank better in search engines. Basically, you should target keywords that receive at least over 100 searches every month, and also keywords with high commercial intent. Another tip is to input the keywords into Google to see what videos come up, so you can see what comes up on page one of Google for that keyword. Make a special note so you can revisit them later. Doing this critical because besides learning to rank on YouTube, we will also go through ranking on Google to maximize your traffic potential. Now that you have your list, it’s time to analyze their ranking competition to eliminate irrelevant keywords from your list to make it more tangible and manageable.

However, it is important to note: The results you get for each keyword’s level of competition are just an estimation of its popularity among Adwords advertisers. Basically, this result gives you the commercial intent of each keyword. Although the competition level does not have anything to do with how hard or easy it is to rank for those keywords, it shows the probability of commercial intent.

4. Analyzing competition

You have your long list of (growing) potential keywords that can be quite daunting. Therefore, we need another step to eliminate the incoherent ones. These are the keywords that aren’t ‘impossible’ to rank but just requires more time and resources. This usually means that the keywords are used by authoritative and well-established channels with a lot of subscribers and links from authority sources. So, your efforts will be fruitless unless your channel size increases, and you have the budget and capability to take them on. Beginners should handpick a few simple keywords that you can rank in a short time or go for very competitive keywords that will take you forever. Fret not, however, as you can also be up there with the more prominent channels once you take time to nurture and grow your channel with patience.

How to analyze YouTube Video Ranking Competition?

What are the factors that contribute to a keyword’s ranking on both Google and YouTube? Below are some of the many factors that both YouTube and Google consider ranking videos in their search engines. Of course, the factors below aren’t complete because unless you work for any of them, you will never understand their special algorithm.

Factors for ranking on Google

For Google, factors that affect the on-page video ranking include keywords in the title of your video, in your description, and your tags. In contrast, factors for Off Page Video Ranking include the relevant backlinks, which make up of quantity, quality, and anchor text optimization, and social indicators.

Factors for ranking on YouTube

For YouTube, you get several more ranking factors than Google. This includes keywords in the title of your video in the description section, tags, and social indicators. On top of this, other factors include the click-through rate of suggested videos and search results, video views, likes and dislikes, number of subscribers, comments, embedded links, and channel authority. For video views, you will rank well if your viewers watch at least 60% of your videos.

For likes and dislikes, this indicator shows you how much people are enjoying your content, and the same goes for subscribers. All of these indicators help YouTube to measure your channel’s engagement with its users. The higher the meeting, the better the chances for your ranking. Nevertheless, there is no definite amount of views, subscribers, comments, or backlinks that you have to meet as it differs from every niche. For instance, the competition will be higher with a more popular niche, so your number of views, etc. should also be elevated to stay competitive.

SEO Competition Analysis for YouTube – Targeting the Right Keywords

From all your research so far, you should have gathered an extensive list of potential keywords. According to your niches, this list can be a one-pager up to several pages long. Now the next step is not just to target ALL these keywords, but to focus on the ones that are easier to rank on the first page of both Google and YouTube quickly. Since late 2018, YouTube stopped showing the number of videos for each keyword. Also, their results page is now in continuous scroll format like what you see on Facebook or Instagram. This new scrolling method is excellent, so you can see your whole list without having to click on the selected pages one by one. Unless, of course, if you have a long list because then it can be quite a hassle to locate specific keywords that you are looking for.

Tube Buddy

Thankfully, the internet offers us a lot of tools like the Tube Buddy software that can help us determine a keyword’s ranking possibilities. Tube Buddy is a Chrome browser extension, which means you can easily install it to your Google Chrome browser. The software comes with a free and paid plan. Depending on your needs, the free program has limited functions but still great for beginners who want to analyze keywords but do not want to break the bank. However, once your channel grows to a specific size, or when you think you have the budget for the paid plan, it will be worth it upgrading to the paid plan to unlock more features that can help you target better. If you use YouTube as your primary marketing strategy, then it would also be advisable to take the paid plan.

Since it is an extension, all you need to do is sign up and install it on your browser. Then, you can just head on to Youtube.com as per usual and begin your keyword analysis! As long as your plugin is installed, you can conduct your research by just typing keywords into the YouTube search bar. As an example, let us use the phrase ‘how to remove blackheads fast.’ Your search results will appear on the right-hand corner, and you will learn your phrase’s search volume, competition, and an overall score out of 100.

On top of that, you also get a list of related searches. If the phrase’s competition is high, then Tube Buddy will suggest its overall score is pretty low, meaning it would be challenging to rank. However, if competition and search volumes are considerably low, your overall rating will be higher, which makes it easier to rank. While doing this, you should also note down all the more top-ranking or ‘green’ phrases that your Tube Buddy search results have revealed. Now that you have your targeted keyword list, its time for the next step.

5. Generating high converting videos

Finally, in step 5, we can begin creating our unique and engaging video for our YouTube channel. Your videos should be both informative and entertaining to attract visitors and boost engagements with high click-through rates for your other sales funnels. Creating a video might sound daunting to some of you as you probably think you need to be a chatty extrovert and stand in front of the camera. But that’s not the case! It could easily be a slide show video with a voice over and still, get a lot of views.

Try doing a quick search on the current products on the market; most of them do not require any faces and still get the right amount of views. Also, you do not even need to use your own voice! In this next section, you will learn how you can do this with minimal costs. Do not worry as it is not going to be anything that will burn a hole in your pockets, but necessary to spend a little to boost your results. And thus, let us explore how we can do all this with our handy keyword list.

Creating good quality videos with high conversions

Your inspiration or motivation while thinking of ideas for video content should be focusing on how you can add value to your viewers. First impressions are important, and if your video resonates with your viewers, it will be a ripple effect that would lead to them signing up to your email list, subscribing to your channel, etc. To begin, let us go back to the list we gathered from our market research step. These keywords should give you an insight into your audience’s habits such as who they are, what they are searching for, what type of offers do they relate to the most etc. Knowing your audience’s behavior, you will know exactly how you can reach out to them, such as what type of videos to speak to them, what language they are speaking, etc. Once you know all this, it is time to incorporate all these points into your script and, eventually, your video, so that you can guarantee that your audience will respond positively.

To put this into more perspective…

Let us go back to using our ‘removing blackheads’ phrase to put this into a better perspective. So, imagine you are creating a video to promote a skincare product that targets blackheads. You will have a mixed audience of both men and women but majority would be made up of women. Then, depending on what type of market you are targeting, you can either target women who searching for ‘products to remove blackheads’ or ‘blackhead removing tool.’ By typing these phrases, you can find a bunch of appropriate sizes that will tell you your audience’s demographic. With all this valuable information and your extensive list of keywords, it is time to incorporate them into your script.

Do not overcomplicate your script

A short and straightforward script is what you need to capture your audience’s attention. You don’t want something long and draggy because your viewers might get bored halfway and turn to someone else’s channel. Instead, you can try out this basic guideline:

Script guideline for creating YouTube videos

1. Introduction: As with everything, you need an introduction. The opening is essential to set the tone of what you are trying to achieve so that your viewers will know right off the bat if it is relevant to them. As you can see from the sample below, it is short and sweet, yet captivating enough for viewers to want to stay until the end of your video. Why? You add value to their life by providing tips or solutions to the problems they had in the first place!

Example: Your basic introduction should sound something like, “Hey guys, it’s Louise here, and today, I will be sharing my top products for removing blackheads in just a few days.”

2. Highlight problems: There is a reason why people turn to the internet, which is usually because they have issues they need help solving. To add benefit to your viewers, you want to be the solution to their problems so that they will remember you and even recommend you to friends and families. Since you already know what they are here for, include a short section that highlights the problem itself, and what will happen if the problem does not get solved.

Example: Blackheads are a problem faced by many, and it causes us to feel insecure. Sometimes, it might even get so bad that we don’t feel like going out of the house.

3. Provide a solution to add value to your viewers: As mentioned earlier, viewers usually turn to the internet to help them solve problems. Going back to our ‘removing blackheads’ theme as an example, think of how you can help them with their problem either with a product or with some other skincare tips and tricks. If your method works, you can best believe that you will have new subscribers, and they might even visit your other blogs, sites, social media, etc. Additionally, they will also recommend your channel to friends and families.

Example: Although blackheads are pesky, they are not impossible to get rid of! Thankfully, many skincare brands understand the pains of having blackheads and therefore come out with ranges of products to help you tackle this problem. Here are some of the best products available on the market that you should try out!

4. You must have a ‘call to action’: A Call To Action or more commonly known as CTA, is something that you want your viewers to do after watching your videos. For example, if your video is a product suggestions video, you would want your viewers to check out products that you are affiliated with. Or, if you have a relevant digital product that you are selling, you can also mention it in the video so that your viewers are well informed.

Example: Well, there you have it! If you have been searching high and low for blackhead products that actually work, the products on this list have been proven to work for myself, and many others. For more information on the products, you can check out my blog, where I go even more in-depth for each of these products. And if you like them, you can also use my special discount code to purchase them at affordable prices. If you liked this video, don’t forget to subscribe and click on the notification button so that you can stay up to date with my latest videos.

As long as you use this basic structure as a template, you can be sure to get your message across quickly and concisely. It does not have to be complicated, as your viewers might get bored quickly.

A useful software to create high converting YouTube videos

Thankfully, there are many tools and software on the market that you can use to creating good quality YouTube videos. One of the more popular software is called Vidnami. Now, if you think you have heard of this name, that is probably because almost everyone uses this software. Is it really that good? From my personal experience, yes. What I enjoy is that I can simply upload my script, and the software will automatically generate slideshows that I can use.

Besides the software, you can, of course also create slideshows via PowerPoint or Keynote for Mac users. However, Vidnami just makes everything easier and saves me a lot of time. With a few clicks, you can select your template, add high-quality product images, and other components that will make your videos more attractive and engaging.

Five steps to use Vidnami

1. Choose your video template

There are a few templates on Vidnami for you to choose from. You should select the templates that are less cluttered and will look good with your pictures and script.

2. Add video script

Vidnami allows you to easily upload your script so that it can automatically convert them into slideshows.

3. Slides generated

You now have your slides.

4. Voiceovers

Voiceovers are a great way to stress on the message that you want to get across with your videos. You can use voiceovers to explain your products so that your viewers can learn even more. To do this the low budget way is to record your own voice reading out the script. A low budget doesn’t mean it has to be low quality; however, as you can find good recording software for free.  Alternatively, you can also hire voiceover artists which you can easily find on freelance websites online like Upwork or Fiverr. They don’t usually cost much, and you can really higher people with excellent pronunciation and voices. Depending on your niche, you can even choose either male or female voiceover artists.

5. Preview and generate your video

At last, you can preview your entire project and create your video once you are happy with your final result. By producing your video, it will be automatically downloaded and saved onto your desktop.

If you want, you can add an additional step, and that is to add a piece of nice background music. This step is not crucial as some videos might have the music louder than the voiceover, and it becomes frustrating to watch. Your music soundtrack will also come from the many samples that Content Samurai offers. However, be sure to adjust the volume of your soundtrack music, and also the timing to ensure it fits with the direction of your video. Ultimately, you want to create something that viewers can watch with pleasure.

As of 2019, Content Samurai’s latest updates gives users access to their database of high-quality HD videos that you can also include in your video projects. As they are in HD, your videos will be good quality, and also have a premium feel. This feature by Content Samurai can definitely save you a lot of money, as buying these clips individually will cost you a lot of money. But instead, you are just paying for your monthly Content Samurai subscription to access thousands of HD video clips.

Content Samurai price

To get access to all of Vidnami’s useful features and database of HD video clips, the monthly subscription fee is at $97 per month. Understandably, this amount is pretty steep, especially for beginners. One tip is to start off with using a free software, and once you have the budget, it will be smarter to invest in the software to boost conversions even more.

6. Remember to optimize before uploading your videos

Once you have created your videos, there are a few more optimization steps before uploading them.

  1. High Definition (HD) videos are better to watch. The less grainy the video, the more people would want to view it. Also, to compete with all the other videos on YouTube, you need to have a fighting stance. Ask yourself this, would you watch a pixelated video until the end?
  2. Search Engine Optimization is crucial to boost your traffic even more. If you have an excellent video but miss out on YouTube SEO, then your efforts will be wasted by half. YouTube SEO is more straightforward than Google SEO. It begins even with your file name, which means you should rename your file to your target keyword, which in our example we have been using is ‘Removing Blackheads.’ Therefore, you can come up with a more compelling title that also includes the term ‘removing blackheads’ like “HowToRemoveBlackheadsFast.mp4.”
  3. The third thing you should do before uploading your videos is to add a compelling description. On an iMac, you can do this by right-clicking on your video file and then clicking on ‘get info.’ Then, scroll down until you see ‘comments.’ Click on this, and add a short but compelling description of your video. Most importantly, your story should include the top keywords that you are targeting for this video.
  4. Creating and optimizing your channel

As a YouTuber, your goal is to build your channel and become a strong contender in your niche by tackling your audience’s most searched problems and offering solutions to them. If your channel offers constant, valuable content, then you will have an influential authority. And with a reliable authority, it will be easier to rank your videos in the future. Therefore, this section is all about creating a ‘Premium’ channel for a competitive edge. As an example, you can do a search on your keywords and look through the results that pop up. Compare the best matched video with a the worst one and look at which components do they differ from each other.

Ultimately, you would want to use the good one for inspiration of course. In building your ‘premium’ brand, you also should consider using a ‘nicer’ channel name. Of course, having the channel name ‘removing blackheads’ does not sound too ‘branded.’ Instead, you can use something like ‘The Skincare Diaries’ that also has a better ring to it. It is also short, sweet, and fun to say, which means viewers will remember you quickly, and it is even easier for them if they want to recommend your channel to others. While your videos target individual keywords, your brand is ultimately what your viewers will follow and recognize from that point on.

How you can customize your YouTube Channel

Customize your URL

To create a ‘branded’ YouTube channel, there are a few ways you can do this. The first thing once you hit 100 or more subscribers is to get a customized URL. There are however other requirements before you can do this. The first is that you need to have 100 subscribers or more. Next, your channel has to be at least 30 days old. Then, you need to upload a photo on your channel icon, and also a channel art. Once you meet all this criteria, you can then change your URL from the mumbo jumbo the site automatically gives your channel, to something like youtube.com/c/TheSkincareDiaries. Now, doesn’t that look way better? In meeting the criteria, you are also one step closer to creating your branded channel.

Segment videos into playlists

The next tip is to divide your videos into a different playlist. Basically, segment your videos so that your viewers can find what they are looking for easily. If they can’t find your videos, chances are they might be frustrated and head to another channel. Again using the ‘removing blackheads’ example, you can segment playlists into different categories like products, tools, and homemade remedies, etc.

Add a description for your channel

Adding a channel description is another right way to incorporate more keywords that you want to rank. You should keep this segment short. However, it should include a brief and straightforward introduction of your channel.

Adding links

If you have other social media sites, a blog, or a website, include as many of them on your YouTube channel. The more social sites you have, the more potential viewers will trust you. If your social media is just starting to grow, it is also a great way to get more exposure.

8. Optimization strategies to rank on page one of YouTube and Google in no time

  1. Your video now has the keyword you want to target as a title, and you are ready to upload it to your channel. Ensure you select ‘unlisted’ before uploading. Then, input all the correct information.
  2. Ensure that your keyword is in the title at the very beginning.
  3. Add links to your site on the first description line so that viewers don’t have to scroll to find it.
  4. A short description for your video is helpful so you can include as many keywords as you can. A rule of thumb is to have at least around 300 words containing keywords. This description isn’t for ranking on YouTube, but essential for ranking on Google.
  5. You can ‘tag’ keywords onto your videos that will rank your target keyword and also other keywords.
  6. Upload a thumbnail that looks good, and you are ready to publish. Doing this will ensure more viewers click on your video even when it pops up in their suggestions. If you have a lame thumbnail, viewers will choose the more attractive one even though your title says what they are looking for.

9. Maintaining top rank on YouTube

To get the best seats on the ranking scale, you need to boost engagements by getting views, likes, and comments. To do this, you need to do some promotional activities like sharing your channel on social media pages, seeking help from friends and families, adding pins to your videos on Pinterest posts, answering forums, and linking your channel, etc.

10. Ranking YouTube videos on Google’s first page

The key to Google search engine ranking is to have backlinks. Backlinks work for the more competitive terms. And with YouTube videos, they have a higher authority on Google, which means they favor YouTube videos even more. What this means is that you only need a few good quality backlinks to make your way to page one.

Several sources for backlinks that you can checkout are such as below:

  1. Guest Post are great and you just need one to three good quality posts from websites that are relevant to your niche.
  2. Web 2.0 is where you can create special content to diversify links.
  3. Infographics are a great and interesting way to include backlinks. Infographs also capture people’s attention better, and they are easier to read. You can include back links to your original video.
  4. Audio from your videos can be uploaded to audio sharing sites like podcasts, that will allow you to eventually link back to your YouTube videos.

Conclusion

All these methods that I have emphasized above are tried and tested by myself, and possibly others in the field. These steps are necessary steps that you need to do in order to boost your YouTube channel. Although these steps are basic guidelines, as an entrepreneur and content creator, it is also up to you to think outside the box of ways that you can even better your channel. The internet is full of possibilities, and by following these steps, you will begin seeing traffic on your channel in no time. I hope this helps, and I hope to see your good quality YouTube videos on YouTube and Google’s page one soon!
