How to Start a Blog in 27 Minutes or Less

Blogs are a fun way to kill time as they provide a platform for entertainment. They are very versatile with lots of information, and most of the time, it’s easy to get lost down the rabbit hole in one of them. There is a blog about everything these days. If you can think about it, there’s probably also a blog for it. Blogging used to be more of a hobby than a stream of revenue. Most famous bloggers out there who are making millions with their blogs started as an innocent outlet for them to talk about something they love. But the internet has since evolved, and blogging has become a very lucrative revenue stream.

Blogging is fun, and you don’t have to be a technical wiz or web designer to start one. All you need is to follow a step by step guide of instructions, and there is also plenty of help on the internet such as this one! If you prefer video tutorials, I’m sure you can also easily find them on the internet. Before we explore the steps of building a blog, let’s look at why you should consider starting one!

Why start a blog?

As I mentioned before, there is a blog for everything these days and many reasons why people choose to start one. It could be a pure passion, but more increasingly, I believe people are jumping on the bandwagon as it promises a profitable income. It also gives people the promise of being their boss and getting away from corporate life. Businesses also use blogs for advertising their business and driving traffic to their store to increase sales. For businesses, blogs are also essential to build trust and credibility and engage with their customers. So, if you’re a business, or if you just have something you want to share with a bunch of people and make passive income at the same time, keep reading and build your blog today!

Simple steps to start a blog

1. Choose your blog platform

Since blogs are so popular, you can expect there are a bunch of platforms out there. But the most popular and most trustworthy (in my opinion) is WordPress. A blogging platform simply just means the software you are using to run your blog.

Both WordPress.com and WordPress.org can be used, and it depends on what you want. If you just want a rigid blog and you wish to publish your content without customizing it, then WordPress.com is for you. On the other hand, if you want your blog to have the look and feel of your brand, you will need WordPress.org as its entirely customizable. Both this software are free to use, but you will need to pay for a domain name and web hosting.

2. Choose a web host

A web host is sort of like a home for your blog, so you must choose one that suits your needs. Your web host should be cost-effective, reliable, and have excellent customer service in case you experience any technical difficulties in the future. For example, if your blog is down, and you can’t reach customer support to get it solved quickly, it will have a negative impact if you’re a business. Or, if you’re not a business, your readers might lose trust in you if they suddenly can’t find your blog.

Bluehost is great for hosting, and their prices are reasonable. I’ve been using it on my blogs, and my experience has been great so far.

3. Choose your domain name

A domain name is crucial, as it is what your readers will use to access your blog. If you’re a business, you probably already have a domain name in mind, and it’s usually the name of your business. If you don’t, Bluehost makes it free and simple to get one.

There are a few essential things to remember when choosing the right domain name. Keep in mind that your domain name is how your users can find your blog. So, it needs to be something relatively simple and not too tricky to spell. It would be frustrating if they keep misspelling it and still never find your blog. Secondly, you should choose something short and simple, so it’s easy to remember. It would help if its catchy and fun to pronounce too! Thirdly, don’t use any symbols or hyphens as they are confusing and hard to remember. Fourthly, keywords are great to use in your domain name but make sure its relatable and it makes sense. Lastly, you should use .com instead of .net if you have the choice. There’s no specific reason as both functions well, .com just has a better ring to it.

Here are some examples:

Good domain name: www.panda.com

Bad domain name: www.Luigi-And-Associates.com

Don’t worry if you can’t think of a name at the time. A pop-up screen will let you claim $11.99 worth of credits, which you can request for your domain name later on.

4. Create your Bluehost account

Now, you need to choose your Bluehost plan. You get an option of three plans as below:

  • 12 months – $8.45 per month
  • 24 months – $6.95 per month
  • 36 months – $5.45 per month

You should choose the plan according to your business goals. As you can see, the longer the tenure, the less you have to pay. If you foresee your business going in the long run, you can sign up for the 36 months and pay less. However, keep in mind that hosting sites will need at least a 12 months deposit. Bluehost also always has a bunch of great promotions, so you should keep a lookout for them.

Once you’ve decided on a plan, all you need to do is fill in all your details and make the payment. You will then receive a welcome message to confirm your purchase. You should now change the password as the given one might be too generic or too hard to remember.

5. Set up WordPress

Bluehost works well with WordPress, and you can launch your blog in no time, and it even comes with step by step instructions. Once you have a Bluehost account, you will also get login information to access your Cpanel account. You can look at it as the back end of your site.

Now you will be guided to set up WordPress. You will need to choose the domain that you want to integrate WordPress to. You will ‘directory’ next to your domain name. Here you can choose either to be found via www.blog.com or www.blog.com/blog. People generally prefer the first one. Next, under ‘advanced options,’ edit your account details for your WordPress account. Here, you should also give your blog a name. Then, simply click ‘Install Now.’ Voila! You have your WordPress blog installed, and your information will be emailed to you. From now on, you can use these login details to access your blog.

6. Design your blog the way you want it

Here’s the fun part, customizing your blog. The great thing about the internet is that you will access to a bunch of free themes at your disposal. Themes are great and easy to use, so you don’t have to customize every single detail unless you want to.

On WordPress, head to ‘Appearance’ on the left side of the screen and click on ‘Themes.’ Then click on ‘Add New.’ This will open up a myriad of free themes and you can sort them or search by keyword to find your perfect theme. Once you’ve found the right one, just click ‘Install’, and your blog will be updated.

7. Write your first blog post

Writing blog posts are very straightforward, and resembles Microsoft Word. At the dashboard, locate ‘Posts’ and click ‘Add New’. Key in the title at the top bar and write away in the content section, which is the box below. You can also customize your content such as adding images, and many more.

8. Monetize your blog (optional)

When you’re ready, you can advanced into the next stage of blogging, earning passive income. Some ideas to do this is by selling products such as eBooks, subscriptions, or other services. Once you have them for sale, ClickFunnels are a great software to help you run your business, since you won’t have any experience at the start.

Affiliate marketing is another great method that’s been proven to succeed and make people lots of money. All you have to do is tie products or brands with your blog content and you can start promoting products you find on Amazon.

9. Further customization

You can also further customize your blog with a bunch of tools such as widgets and plugins. You can find a lot of tutorials on how to do this online.

Finally, you have a platform to let your creative juices flow, and also make some extra income! You need to have the right mindset going in, and you will see the readers start to pour in. As long as you keep putting out original and engaging content, you will succeed.
