Make Money As a Food Blogger

Food bloggers don’t make much compared to the other niche bloggers out there. Most of them probably only make less than $1000 a month, which is not sustainable enough to quit your job and do it full time. So, why are food bloggers not succeeding? Could it be due to people’s disinterest in the niche? Heck no. Food is an international language that everyone reveres. It’s also not because of the competitive market or successful food bloggers being better chefs, and no, it also has nothing to do with luck. Instead, what helped me to get ahead in the food blogging industry is a life-changing tool that I’m going to share with you today.

It took a few things to get where I am today. And honestly, I have never imagined where I am today, even in my wildest dreams! You need consistency, commitment, and an effective sales funnel. If you haven’t heard of sales funnels, then you’re already doing something wrong. In this article, we will explore ways to monetize your blog as you have never experienced before. It will not be any of those ‘how to run effective marketing campaigns’ kind of article either. I mean, that works, but I’m going to share something even better. It’s how I turned my blog from earning $0 a month to almost over $5,000 a month. However, this isn’t a get rich quick scheme. It took hard work, tears, and sleepless nights but being where I am today is so worth it. Now, let’s begin the article.

6 Steps to a Successful, Money Making Food Blog

Running a blog is a lot of work; there are just so many things that you need to worry about. Running a food blog is even worse. Thankfully, I’ve narrowed it down to six simple steps, and you will thank me at the end of the article.

1. Start a Food Blog

Running a blog is hard, but setting one up only takes a few minutes. All you need is to be able to follow a simple set of instructions, and you’re good to go. There’s help for this everywhere on the internet. A simple Google search can give you a bunch of video tutorials that you can follow. But before that, you need to ask yourself two questions:

a. Where do you want to host your blog?

A web host is like a home for your blog. Therefore, this is an important decision as you will need a reliable host that will not bring you difficulties in the future. Understandably, you would want to save money and go with a free host, but you need to ensure this free host is trustworthy. Or at least have a customer support team who will help you during downtimes.

This is important because sometimes your readers might complain that they’re unable to access your blogs or experiencing other difficulties. If this happens, you need to troubleshoot it with your host to get it up and running again. If the issue doesn’t get fixed or if your blog is down for a long time, your users might lose faith and go to another food blog.

I’ve been using Bluehost, and they’re very reliable. Bluehost makes it very easy to set up your blog, and their customer support is always available to help me out. Bluehost is not free, though, but I think it’s better to splurge (only a few bucks) on this now to ensure smooth running in the future.

Once you have Bluehost, setting up the rest of your blog is easy, and you can do it in just a few clicks.

b. What is your domain name?

Your domain name is also very important. It’s how you will be identified and how your readers can find you on the web. Therefore, it should be something short and catchy! Having said this, don’t waste too much time coming up with a catchy domain name that you delay your whole blog. I’ve seen this happen to many people.

You should also pick something that’s easy to spell and doesn’t contain random symbols or hyphens or capital letters.

At some point, you will have to choose between either a .com or .net ending. I’d suggest going with .com as it looks better and shows a global outreach. However, using .net doesn’t affect anything either.

Since you’re a food blog, come up with something accessible and relatable, like If it’s overly complicated, readers might get frustrated looking for your blog and just give up entirely.

2. Create awesome content

Food bloggers have the most room for content ideas! If you’re stuck for content, just post recipes! I love going through millions and millions of recipes online. Although I rarely cook myself. Besides recipes, I also love looking at pictures of FOOD! So, if you’re ever stuck for ideas, just have these two, and I can guarantee you’ll be fine.

Creating content for your blog is a regular thing. You can get ideas from anywhere! You can post daily special recipes, or even a food diary if you’re traveling somewhere. Your blog is going to take some time to kick off, and you just need to be patient and post regular content. Then, your following will soon begin to grow.

Another way to grow your blog is via social media. You might have a larger following on your social media than your blog. The best way is to link both these platforms so one can benefit from the traffic from the other.

3. “Freebie” lead magnet

A lead magnet is something that captures your audience’s attention in exchange for their email address. Your reader’s email address is very important as it has the ability to convert them into paying customers. This lead magnet could be anything that can be deemed valuable by your customer. You could post a free eBook of your favorite recipes! Or something straightforward like a checklist for a recipe or a calendar.

Why every food blogger needs a lead magnet?

Email marketing is very important as it’s a personal link between your brand and the customer. Therefore, A lead magnet is an inconspicuous way to get their email address for marketing purposes. Growing your email marketing list is very important.

What makes a good lead magnet?

Here are some ideas for an effective lead magnet:

  1. Quick win – Your lead magnet should give your customer a quick win for your avatar.
  2. Problem solver – It should solve a problem for your customer so that they will keep coming back.
  3. Specific – Don’t go for something general for your lead magnet. The more specific you are, the higher the chance of conversion.
  4. Easy to digest – Don’t give them something full of texts as they might not read the whole thing. Instead, come up with something short or better yet, full of pictures.
  5. Valuable – Should provide instant gratification that will make your readers remember
  6. Demonstrate brand expertise – Your lead magnet should also reflect your brand

4. Create a landing page for your freebie

A landing page is where you can advertise your lead magnet. It’s a different page from your blog posts and you can make it into a high converting landing page. This means that it has all the components to entice your readers into buying or subscribing something.

ClickFunnels can help you to come up with a high converting landing page in 30 minutes or less! Once you have this up and running, you can begin making sales in no time!

5. Create a digital product

Creating a digital product for sale is the fastest way to make money for your blog. You can consider this once your blog is running smoothly.

Methods such as Google Adsense can also make you money but that’s literally only pennies per click. Other methods like promoting Amazon products also can work but it takes a longer time.

Since you’re a food blog, you can easily come up with a recipe eBook that you can sell. For example, you can create a set of recipes for every season or even things like “5 recipes for 3 ingredients and below”. This can be a recurring or passive income for your blog. eBooks are great as they’re easy to curate. All you need is Microsoft Word, and you can convert your files to PDF for sale. As you can see, this requires little to no cost at all and you can sell them for significant amounts. You might hire a graphic designer but that doesn’t cost a lot either.

6. Make a sales page to sell your digital product

Now that you have a digital product, you need a platform to sell it! A sales page is automatic, and it continues helping you to make sales even when you’re sleeping!

ClickFunnels is great for creating high converting sales pages that will work for you even when you’re sleeping.

Bonus: Other ways to make money from a food blog

Besides creating a digital product for sale, there are also many other things that you can do to make money from your food blog. Here are some ideas:

  • Private advertising or paid sponsorship
  • Advertising networks such as Mediavine or Google Adsense
  • Selling physical products such as branded mugs, t-shirts, etc.
  • Contact local vendors

Digital ads is another favorite way for bloggers to monetize their blog. Platforms such as Google Adsense, Gourmet Ads, or Yellow Hammer can deliver ads on your blog. All you have to do is advertise some ads and get commission. All you have to do is sign up, wait for the approval and follow their technical guidelines. Before you implement this, have a look around at all the ad providers to see which ones give the most reasonable commissions.

Affiliate sales commissions also can make you money if you have a lot of traffic on your blog. What affiliate marketing means is that you include hyperlinks on your content that links your readers to specific products. If your reader makes a purchase of the product, you then get a commission out of this sale. As a food blog, you can advertise cooking equipment or utensils and get some commission from kitchenware companies.
