I can bet most people reading this have done at least 1 online quiz just out of curiosity. I mean, it’s hard to resist: you might’ve always wondered which TV character resembled you the most, which pop star has the same personality than your, or just test your knowledge.
Besides, there’s always a friend sharing their results on Facebook, drawing you even further to see if you can do better than them.
While you probably finish most quizzes in a minute (or even less), creating them isn’t as easy as it seems. Sure, people with a company supporting their attempts can create mind-blowing quizzes, but do smaller online entrepreneurs have the same chances without the money?
Well, they do with Thrive Quiz Builder.
What is it?
It’s a WordPress plugin that you can use for creating amazing quizzes in almost the same time it takes you to solve them. Even so, the results look professional and polished.
It can also be a bit difficult to realize what it does at first sight.
Sure, it’s easy to see that it lets you create attractive quizzes to generate engagement with your visitors and exposure through their shares on social media. This translates directly into less bounces and more traffic for you.
However, it does more than that, yet you only realize it once you start using it.
The plugin segments your visitors and guides them through the entire process, giving you a nice boost to your conversions. It discovers what interests them, and from that interest, it segments them and provides them with content related to it. Finally, you can even perform split tests to find what woks best for you.
How to create a quiz
Of course, you need to install and activate it with your license key; we’ll get to that in a second.
After you’ve done that, go to your Thrive Dashboard and find your Quiz Builder. Once there, follow these steps.
1. Creating the quiz
Click on Add New and choose the template you like the most. You can create your quiz from the ground up without choosing predefined configurations, but the templates look great, and they’re the best choice for newcomers who can just edit and adapt them.
To go into the depths of the plugin, let’s go with building our quiz from scratch, though. After choosing, name your quiz.
2. Choosing type
The following step is to find which quiz you want to use. You have 4 different types, based on how they evaluate the visitors: numbers, percentage, category, and right or wrong.
Choosing one will dictate how the results will show at the end of your quiz, so pick the one that best fits what you need.
3. Choosing style
After you determined the type of quiz, you want to look for a style for it.
Again, there are 4 palette options here: light blue, dark, gray orange, and dark ocean blue. My favorite here is the dark or dark ocean since I feel it’s easier on the eyes.
4. Adding questions
This is the meat of the process: defining which questions and answers you wan for your quiz.
To get stated, hit Manage to open the page that shows how your quiz flow will display visually. From here, click on Add Question.
You can choose between 2 types. Both are multiple-choice, but one comes with buttons, and the other comes with images. Since you probably plan on adding more than a single question to your quiz, you can use both at the same time as well.
For the button type questions, you can naturally add the question text and answers, but you can also add an image for it, a description, and some tags. You can even split the points between the answers as you see fit.
The image questions are mostly similar, but an image will display instead of the buttons on each answer.
After you’re done with the questions, you can see the final look of your main quiz page. The preview lets you see how the quiz flows for the readers taking it, so make sure to note if anything needs changes.
If you want to segment your visitors, you can also link different questions based on interests. You can create a specific question to target people with interests on certain topics, and it’ll take them to another targeted question related to their interest before going back to the main quiz.
It does 2 things for you: increase your readers’ engagement even more and keep them on your website for longer.
After you’re done, save and exit.
5. Creating result pages
The last step is naturally to create the page with the results for your visitors to assess how they did. To do this, click on Manage again.
The screen will show you an icon of a blue pencil, so click it to customize the look. It’ll take you to a templates page, similar to the one for creating your questions; choose one that you like.
You’ll see a new window that lets you edit the page to your taste, so adapt it to the style of your blog and quiz. Then, save and exit.
You can create badges for those who did well. These are images that your visitors will get after finishing the quiz, which entices them to share their results.
You have 5 templates to help you design your social badge, so click on the Social Share Badge button. You can customize each template however you like to suit your branding better as well as the quiz they’ve just taken.
After you’ve done the changes necessary, save and exit.
This is the first additional section you can create for your quiz.
Splash pages work as introductions for your quiz. They provide your visitors with information and a call to action to convince them to take your quiz.
The last additional section (and extra) is an opt-in gate that you can leave at the end of each quiz. Users can use this to become subscribers before receiving their results, increasing your email list.
You can integrate your form with your email marketing service and customize it however you like.
Now, you can make this opt-in mandatory for your visitors to see their results, but I strongly advice against it. You want to leave this as an option; forcing them to subscribe will most likely annoy them and even keep them from visiting your site again (I know I’ve done it).
Publish your quiz
Go to your quiz dashboard and copy the shortcode that’s displayed there. Go to the page/post on which you want to display your quiz and paste your shortcode right on the editor.
If you’re also a Thrive Architect owner and use it for building your website’s sections, you can see a block that’s exclusive for the Quiz Builder. Just drag it and drop it on your page.
The last step is to click on Publish, and your quiz will go live.
You can use an A/B testing tool on your results and splash pages, as well as your opt-in form.
You can test different variations of these sections to stick to the one that gives you the most conversions. You can click the cloning icon on your dashboard to create new variations to edit and try.
You can make your results page show different information depending on your readers’ results.
You can use it to display certain images based on the score of your visitors. You do it by creating dynamic content boxes on your result pages. You then set the parameters that will trigger each image.
You can also add more than just images. You can add videos, buttons, and even sign-up forms. The latter is especially good if you can make your visitors feel like they’ve earned the right to be in your email list; it can increase your leads significantly.
Finally, you have the mandatory reports that give you all the details related to how your quizzes perform.
Click on your Reports option. You’ll see a list with 5 options for reviewing your reports:
- Show Report gives you a drop-down display with all the types.
- Source lets you choose specific quizzes to see their results.
- Date Interval is the period over which the report was made.
- Graph Interval lets you change the period; this can be daily, weekly, and monthly.
- Reset Statistics is self-explanatory.
The first one, Show Report, will show you 4 types of reports:
- Quiz Completion lets you see how many times your quizzes have been completed.
- Quiz Flow shows you the data of the steps on your quiz. It’s great for analyzing where users have abandoned your quiz.
- Questions lets you see how many questions are answered (percentage). You can use it to research your market and its interests.
- The Users report lets you see relevant information about the visitors taking your quizzes. This includes when they took it, their IP address, the result they got, and whether or not they got a social badge. You can also see how they answered each question if you click on View.
As with other Thrive products, you can pay for the license or just get it as part of the Thrive Membership for $19 per month.
As for the single plugin, the prices are as follows:
- $67 for 1 site.
- $97 for 5 sites.
- $147 for 15 sites.
Pros and cons
Of course, nothing is perfect.
This plugin is very intuitive, with the drag-and-drop editor, simple steps, templates, and easy segmentation with the dynamic results. The additional features also increase its effectiveness, and it looks great on all devices.
However, the only issue I have with it is that the quiz styles feel like there could be more.
Overall, it’s an amazing WordPress plugin that beats other options in price and intuitiveness.
If you want your visitors to feel engaged, convert, increase your traffic, and even build your email list, then this is the best option out there.
