Shopfiy – FAQs

Can I Just Use A Free Shopify theme Option?

There are a number of free Shopify themes out there, and you can use them if you wish. Some of the free themes are very professional looking and have all of the features that the average webmaster could possibly want, including being mobile friendly/responsive. However, not all free Shopify themes are well designed.

If you use a free theme, then you are taking several risks:

Firstly, a lot of other developers may have used the same theme as you. This could put prospective buyers off because they may think that you have copied the site or not put a lot of effort into it. You want your site to represent your brand, not to look like something that people have seen many times before.

Secondly, if you opt for a free theme, then you are unlikely to get support from the developer, and there is no guarantee that the developer will update it in the future. So, if there are any major changes to the underlying Shopify system the theme may not be updated to ensure that it still works.

You can avoid all of those problems by using a theme that has guaranteed support and updates. Premium themes usually have more options too, making them a much better choice for anyone who wants a professional looking and stable store.

Does My Shopify Store Need to be Responsive?

If you want to have an online store that people will buy from and that will appeal to users no matter what device they are using, then yes, it should be responsive.

According to data tracked by StatCounter, mobile traffic accounts for 48.98% of all web traffic. That is slightly more than the traffic from desktop devices (47.04%), with Tablet devices making up the remaining 3.98%.
Mobile devices are here to stay, and a huge percentage of people use them during their day to day commutes or their breaks at work. There are people who do not have desktops, and who use their phone as their primary means of accessing the web.

For people like that, being able to do their product research on their phones, then decide later whether they want to buy from you or not, is essential. A responsive store will look just as good on any screen size, and in any modern browser. Responsive designs scale to the screen, and display navigation elements differently depending on whether the user is on a phone (and likely tapping with one finger) or using a mouse which offers finer control. It makes sense to invest in a theme that is Responsive by design.

Do I Need any Coding Knowledge to Use a Shopify Theme?

You do not need any coding knowledge to install and use Shopify themes. Shopify is designed to be as easy to use as possible. All you need to do is set up a store, install the theme that you want to use, and activate it. If you want to customize the theme, you can do so using the options in the admin panel.

You do not need to know HTML, CSS, or any of the back-end coding languages in order to edit your themes. It is easy to make simple changes to the theme such as changing the color, images, header or footer, simply by using the admin panel.

You can even change the fonts, how many items appear per page, and what images appear in image carousels just by using the admin panel. Some themes also let users reposition page elements, and choose where the social media buttons appear.

If you would like to make more detailed changes to the layout of the site, then you will need to look into editing the code of the theme. This is not recommended for users who do not have coding knowledge. This is another reason why you might want to consider a paid theme since they tend to offer much better customization options.

How Do I Set Up A Third Party Shopify Theme?

Setting up a third party theme is simple. Usually, the theme will be supplied to you by the seller as a .zip file, which you download to your computer, and then upload to your Shopify store. In some cases, the themes are supplied via the Shopify Theme Store, in which case, installing it is just a case of trying it as a preview, then clicking a button to activate it on your site if you decide that you like it.

  1. You can install more than one theme at a time, and activate different ones at different times of the year, or commemorate specific events or promotions.
  2. To activate a theme that was supplied as a .zip file, log in to your Admin Panel and go to Online Store > Themes.
  3. Scroll to the More themes section, and click Upload theme.
  4. Click Choose File and then select the .zip file that the theme creator gave you.
  5. Click Upload

After a few moments, the theme will appear in the Themes section of the admin panel for you to activate.

Activating a premium theme that you selected from the Shopify Theme Store is also a simple process. Just click Add Theme, and the store will notify you that this is a premium theme and that therefore you have to pay. If you are sure that you want to buy the theme (be aware that themes are non-refundable), then click Approve Charge, and you will be charged for the theme. You can then use it on your store.

Free themes from the Shopify store are activated in the same way as premium ones; however, there will be no warning before you activate the theme since there is no charge. There are limits to the number of themes you can have installed at any one time. If you hit those limits, then all you have to do is uninstall one of the themes that you are not using. You can uninstall and reinstall themes as many times as you like.

Can I use The Same Premium Themes on Multiple Stores that I Own?

The license that you are given when you purchase a premium theme is for one store only. You cannot use the same premium theme on multiple websites unless you pay for additional licenses.

Each Shopify store is an ‘account,’ and the license is tied to your account.

The developers do try to be flexible and supportive to the webmasters. So, if you build one store and decide to shut it down and open another store instead, you can contact Shopify Support, and they will transfer the license for the premium theme over from the store that you originally had it on to the new store.

Shopify theme piracy is a serious issue and something that could get your account locked if you are caught trying to get around the system.

A premium Shopify theme is a very good investment that will help you to keep your store running profitably. Good themes are easy to use for you as an admin and for your users as well. This means that you get to enjoy better conversion rates as well as a lower administrative burden.

If you are worried that you have bought a theme that is not legitimate in some way, or if you have any issues with theme licenses, then contact Shopify support. The team is happy to help people who contact them with issues.

Where Can I Learn About Shopify Dropshipping Business Model?

Now, I know a small percentage of you guys want to learn how you can start your own Shopify drop shipping business and start earning money. Well, the author who made the eCom Turbo theme, Franklin Hatchett, earns seven figures. He does affiliate marketing and Shopify dropshipping to make the majority of his money online.

Before getting into the dropshipping business, I highly recommend you have more than 500 – 2000$ to spend on advertising & testing. Now, 500$ – 2000$ may seem like a lot but in reality, it’s nothing compared to what most offline businesses require. That’d being said if you don’t know what you’re doing I’d highly suggest you get a course which can teach you how to do drop shipping/e-commerce properly.

I have personally taken Franklin Hatchett’s eCom Elites Course and if you’re interested in it, you can check out my eCom Elites Review here.

And if you don’t have 500$ – 2000$ budget for drop shipping I’d highly recommend you learn to do affiliate marketing. I have been doing Shopify drop shipping for a quite some time however, recently I have been creating niche sites and making money through affiliate marketing. It can be extremely lucrative if done right and it doesn’t cost much either.

The Verdict

So, which theme should you use for your site? Well, as with so many other web design questions, there is not one correct answer.

Jasper is ideal for boutiques and fashion stores, but the lack of feature updates may put some people off.

Shopify Konversion is highly customizable and would be a good choice for a geek or gadget store where you want to put the emphasis on upselling. It allows you to say “Buying an Avengers-themed phone case? Why not buy a pack of screen protectors as well?” and that’s a good way to maximize your profits.

eCom Turbo is the theme that offers the best balance between being easy to use and versatile, and it is a good choice if you want a ‘general’ theme that will look good with almost anything. It has a lot of nice features for increasing conversion rates, and it saves you the hassle of having to install other scripts too.

There are some other great themes out there as well. If you’re serious about running a successful Shopify store, then you need to invest in a good premium theme that will help you to build trust and get your visitors to engage with your site. Even if all they do, to begin with, is hand over their email address, being able to engage with them better, in the long run, should result in more sales.
